Katy Perry..........................Katy Perry original name Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson, (born October 25 1984 Santa Barbara California U.S.) American pop singer who gained fame for a string of anthemic and often sexually suggestive hit songs as well as for a playfully cartoonish sense of style. Perry's early attempts to mainstream stardom were fruitless with two record labels signing and then dropping her before she had any new material released. In 2007, however, Capitol Records put out Perry's EP Ur So Gay which attracted modest attention for its cheerfully humorous title track. I kissed a Girl, a confident tribute to her fascination with sexuality set against a hard-edged electronic-pop beat, gained a greater sensation a couple of months later. I Kissed A Girl became an instant hit, but it quickly sparked controversies. Many critics argued that the track encouraged sexual relationships between gay and straight men, while others said the scenario which was depicted on the album attracted more male fantasies. I Kissed a Girl, an enthralling combination of sexual satire with a sophisticated tune, allowed I Kissed a Girl to achieve the number one spot in a variety of countries, and to drive sales of her 2008 album One of the Boys. With its bouncy sharp-tongued second single Hot N Cold also proving well-loved, the album which Perry wrote herself eventually registered the sales of over three million copies in the United States.
